How the templates work
Omega Story Workbench is a free story outline tool for games, tabletop campaigns, talks, and novels. It runs in this browser. There is no account, no login, and no cloud draft. You pick a template, fill the stages, and leave with a file. Stories autosave locally. If you want a copy on another device, use Back up all. Nothing you type is uploaded unless you later choose to send an optional email before a PDF or Twine download.
The workbench is built around five templates that share one layout: a title, a stage rail, writing fields, and a side panel for the arc, characters, and locations. Characters and locations are not locked to a single stage. Add them whenever a person or place becomes real. The default template is Personal Story (5-beat). The others cover mythic journeys, linear three-act plots, branching quests, and one-session tabletop prep.
Personal Story (5-beat) is for true stories told out loud. Find a moment of change, challenge, realization, or decision, then narrow it to one event and name what was at risk. Map five beats from the opening scene to the last thought. Build turning points as boulders and attach small vivid pebbles so the night does not stay abstract. Deepen the sensory and emotional detail. Check five essentials and common pitfalls. Workshop is where listener notes live. Use this template for a talk, a story slam, or any first-person piece that has to land in a room.
Hero's Journey is a twelve-stage mythic map. You set up the ordinary world and the call to adventure, walk the road of trials, and return with a lesson. The stages stay short so you can sketch the descent and the return without writing the novel in the side panel. It is the right shape for fantasy campaigns, character-driven games, and any story where the protagonist has to grow through tests. Open the dedicated landing page if you want that template preselected.
Three-Act Structure is the linear spine for novels, scripts, and game stories that do not branch. Premise names the protagonist, the goal, the stakes, and the transformation. The map stage lays out setup, confrontation, and resolution. Build turns those acts into scenes. Tell is the pass where you write the lines you actually need. Workshop holds notes from readers or playtesters. If you want a classic beginning, middle, and end without a mythic overlay, start here.
Game Quest / Branching is for designers who need more than one ending. You define the quest core—who wants what, and what happens if they fail—then map the arc and the branch points. Build holds the details of each choice and its cost. Handoff is the write-up you can drop into a design doc or an engine. Use it for RPG quests, branching missions, and interactive fiction where a decision has to matter later in the session or the build.
TTRPG Adventure / Session is table prep. You name the session intent, map the likely scenes, and stock clues, NPCs, and outcomes without scripting your players. Tell is the run sheet you glance at when the table goes quiet. Workshop is the after-action log. It will not replace your VTT, but it will keep the first hour of the night from being a blank page. Pair locations with Hexus Editor if you want a hex map for the places you named.
Exports are meant to leave the browser. Copy or download Markdown for a manuscript. Download JSON for a structured snapshot of one story. Download Twee for Twine. Download PDF when you want a printable packet. Full-workbench backups stay on your device. Markdown, JSON, and backups never ask for email. PDF and Twine may show an optional form. If you opt in, Omega Games gets your name, email, and story title so we can send occasional tips. Skip it and the download still works. There is no account.
That is the whole product. Pick a template, stay on this page, and leave with a file. If the places in your story need a map, Hexus Editor is a click away. If you are building a game and need a studio to co-develop or ship custom tools, Omega Games does that work. The outline stays yours, in this browser, until you export it.
